The death of self can precede the death of the body.
For self to die, I cannot simply bypass it.
I must look at it head on. Self is saying no to God. I must say no to the no. But to say no to it, I must see it in all its ‘glory’. I must examine its manifestations in my beliefs, thinking, and behaviour, and withdraw the trust from where I have mistakenly placed it.
Without the undoing—which is what forgiveness is—I cannot paste spirituality over the top.
If self is not effectively killed, it will find its way out, persistent as the undead.
Once it is defeated, God’s presence and identity become self-evident.
