The big questions

Why am I here? Why is anyone here? What is the point of my life? What is the point of life, per se? What meaning does life have if it can be extinguished so easily? What meaning can humanity have if it can be extinguished so easily, either at its own hand or at the hand of nature?

These questions will drive you nuts if you're not careful. There is a story of a tapestry showing a picture on one side but looking like a mess of loose threads on the other. We're on the wrong side, and trying to see the picture on the reverse side is maddening and doomed to failure. Also, making our lives on this side dependent on our understanding and approval of the picture on the other side is a recipe for emotional instability and probably suicide.

Instead: I try to go through each day doing two things: serve where I can and appreciate where I can. These are the two aspects of love. This is the knotting of the threads which produces the picture on the reverse.

Will we ever know what the picture is on the other side? Hard to say, but when I stay humble and keep my focus on the day, this ceases to matter.
