Whose thoughts are you listening to?

This is the way most people think: a thought comes down the tubes, and they think, 'Wow, the Messiah has spoken! Here's a thought that I have had, so the thought must be true, and since it's true, I need to think about it!' The problem is, a good dealing of thinking that comes down the tubes is rotten, and rotten thinking, compounded, will manifest in a rotten life. Instead of thinking of oneself as the person with the optimal perception and understanding of one's own micro-world and the greater, macro-world beyond, how about trying this: if I have had an unkind, jealous, disappointed, frightened, angry, despairing, despondent, or otherwise negative thought, it is false, followed by, 'What would love have me think and do in this moment? What is the loving thing to think? What is the loving thing to do?' Sometimes when you ask God for guidance, nothing appears to happen. If this occurs, adopt the following position: the default view is 'everything is exactly the way it is meant to be'; the default action is 'what can I do that helps others, right now?'
