How do you overcome pride and ego?

The answer is that you can't. Pride and ego will lead to decision-making based either on short-term benefit despite long-term detriment or on chasing vainly after worthless commodities such as prestige, power (for its own sake), or money. If you have reached the point where you are asking this question you are likely suffering the consequences and looking for an alternative. The bad news is that you cannot overcome pride and ego through cleverness, willpower, spiritual fancy footwork, or other mechanisms. The good news is that there is a solution. The solution consists in recognising that, the more you listen to the voice of the ego, the more power you give it over you, and the more authority you confer on it to make your decisions for you. Once this has been recognised, the remaining step is to go to God in utter humilitly, admitting the failure of your entire way of life, consciously rejecting the values that have hitherto driven you, and deliberately asking God to look after every aspect of your life, in return for which you endeavour always to do only what God instructs you to do, in the benefit of others. Your pride and ego will be overcome for you, and you will be free to live under God.
